How Recent UK Government Announcements May Affect International Students
If you’re planning to study in the UK in 2025 or beyond, it’s crucial to understand the recent changes announced by the UK government that could impact your student journey.
What’s Changing?
01. Graduate Route Under Review
The popular graduate route – which currently allows international students to stay and work in the UK for up to 2 years after graduation is under review. While no decisions have been fully finalised yet, the government is assessing whether this route aligns with the UK’s economic needs and immigration policy. If changes occur, future international students may face stricter conditions or a shorter stay after completing their UK studies.

02. Cost of Living / Maintenance Requirements Are Increasing
One of the more immediate changes affects how much money you must show when applying for the student visa. For the Student route in the UK, you’ll need to demonstrate that you can financially support yourself (called the “maintenance requirement”). The amounts have been increasing:
- If your course is in London: you’ll need £1,529 per month for up to 9 months of study, effective for applications made on or after 11 November 2025.
- If your course is outside London: you’ll need £1,171 per month for up to 9 months.
- In addition, the maximum amount you can offset for pre‑paid accommodation (i.e., subtract from the required maintenance amount) will increase to £1,529 for eligible applications from 11 November 2025.
To put this in perspective: if you’re studying outside London and your course is 9 months or more, you’d need to show roughly £10,539 (9 months × £1,171) as available funds. Similarly in London: ~£13,761 (9 × £1,529).
03. Focus on Quality Institutions and Student Outcome
Alongside financial requirements, there is a clearer policy narrative emphasising that international students should enrol in recognised institutions, and that the UK government wants to ensure students genuinely benefit from studying and contribute to the economy. This means extra attention may be paid to course choice, institution reputation, and post‑study opportunities.
