Great News for International Graduates in Tasmania: Subclass 485 Visa Extension Update

From 12 September 2025, international graduates who have studied and lived in Hobart and surrounding areas will now be eligible for a two-year Second Post-Higher Education Work visa (Subclass 485).
This is a significant update for students choosing Tasmania as their study destination and brings it in line with other regional areas in Australia.

What’s Changed?

Previously, graduates from Hobart were only eligible for one additional year under the second 485 visa stream.
Now, all eligible higher education graduates in Tasmania, including Hobart, will receive two additional years under the second 485 visa stream provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

Why This Matters

This change means that international students in Tasmania can now receive up to four years in total on the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa:

First 485 visa: 2 years
Second 485 visa (from September 2025): 2 years

This extended stay gives students more time to:

Gain valuable Australian work experience
Improve eligibility for permanent residency
Settle into life in Australia with greater confidence and planning

Who’s Eligible?

To be eligible for the Second Post-Higher Education Work visa, applicants must:

Hold a first 485 visa in the Post-Higher Education Work stream
Have a degree from an Australian institution located in a designated regional area
Have lived in a designated regional area for at least 2 years before applying
Continue to live, work, and study in the same regional area to comply with visa conditions

Eligible postcodes for Hobart and surrounding areas include:
7000, 7004 to 7026, 7030 to 7109, 7140 to 7151, 7170 to 7177

This update means that all eligible graduates in Tasmania will now receive the same benefits as students in other regional locations strengthening Tasmania’s appeal as a study destination for international students.
